INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION 

Indian Institutes of Management (IIM)- These are the apex institutions for management education in the country.  

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore- The Indian Institute of Science is the oldest and leading post-graduate and research centre in Science and Engineering 

Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT)- These are our apex institutions for engineering education and research.  Each Institute conducts a First degree course, Master's Degree and Doctoral work.

Regional Engineering Colleges (REC) - Fifteen Regional Engineering Colleges have been established in various States as a joint enterprise of the Central and the State Governments

State Universities - arts, science, engineering, management and medical colleges established and administered by the state Governments and private institutions.  They are affiliated to the state Universities

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION FRAMEWORK – HIGHER EDUCATION 

Bachelor's degree in arts, commerce and sciences is three years.  Eligible after 12 years of school.

Bachelor’s degree (professional) in engineering, technology, dentistry, veterinary and agriculture takes four years, while architecture, law and medicine takes five years.  

Master's degree is of two-year duration. Admission is based on merit/aptitude test

Pre-doctoral programme - Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) is taken after completion of the Master's Degree. 

Doctoral programme.  This can either be completely research based or can include course work. Ph.D. is awarded two year after the M.Phil. or three years after the Master's degree.

GENERAL STRUCTURE OF SCHOOL EDUCATION

All the States and Union Territories of India have adopted a uniform structure of 10+2 education system. 

Primary School     - Classes I-V in 20 States and classes I-IV in other states

Middle School       - Classes VI-VIII in 20 States. Classes V-VII in other states.

Secondary School - Classes IX-X in 20 states, classes VIII-X in other states.

Higher Secondary - classes XI-XII (10+2 pattern) in all states.

TEACHING OF ENGLISH

Teaching of English is compulsory in all the states except Bihar.  However, the classes from which teaching of English is compulsory differs from state to state.

TEACHING OF HINDI

Apart from Hindi speaking States, teaching of national language Hindi is compulsory in all the non-Hindi speaking States except Tamil Nadu and Tripura
